Tokyo shares opened the trading Monday sharply lower as sentiment here was weighed by the uncertainty of the Britain's referendum on its European Union membership later this month.
At 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average plunged 347.81 points, or 2.10 percent, from Friday to 16,253.55.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 28.76 points, or 2.16 percent, to 1, 301.96.
