Tokyo stocks opened lower Friday following a lackluster showing on Wall Street overnight, with investors here in a circumspect mood ahead of possible hints of a rate hike in a speech to be given by the U.S. Federal Reserve's chief later today.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 114.59 points, or 0.69 percent, from Thursday to 16,441.36.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, relinquished 9.60 points, or 0.74 percent, to 1,294.67.

Notable decliners straight from the morning bell comprised insurance, transportation equipment and air transportation-linked stocks.
