Tokyo stocks lost ground Tuesday morning as poor performances on major overseas bourses coupled with the strength of the yen against the U.S. dollar conspired to create a bleak market mood.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average relinquished 54.15 points, or 0.33 percent, from Monday to 16,490.41.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 6.50 points, or 0.49 percent, to 1,329.34.
Notable issues that retreated by the morning break comprised banking, insurance and securities-related stocks.
