Tokyo shares fell Monday on the stronger yen as well as weak U.S. stocks before the weekend due to lower oil prices.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 209.46 points, or 1.25 percent, from Friday at 16,544.56.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 13.72 points, or 1.02 percent, lower at 1,335.84.

Decliners were led by insurance, mining and air transportation issues.

The day's turnover was about 1,694.4 billion yen (around 16.79 billion U.S. dollars).
