Tokyo stocks closed mixed on Tuesday as the market mood remained cautious from the outset as the Bank of Japan began a two-day meeting amid speculation that new monetary policy may be announced.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 27.14 points, or 0. 16 percent, from Friday to close at 16,492.15.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 5.47 points, or 0.42 percent, to finish at 1,316.97.
Notable gainers included electric power and gas, and information and communication issues.
Those that lost ground were led by mining, and iron and steel issues.
The day's turnover was 2,074.9 billion yen (20.36 billion U.S. dollars). Tokyo markets were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
