Tokyo stocks lost ground Friday morning, with the Nikkei index hitting a three-week intraday low, as U.S. shares slid overnight on uncertainty over next week's U.S. presidential election.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 245.90 points, or 1.44 percent, from Wednesday to 16,888.78.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 23.20 points, or 1.70 percent, to 1,345.24.
Every industry category on the main section except non-ferrous metal and fishery, agriculture and forestry issues lost ground, led by insurance, transportation equipment and pharmaceutical issues.
Tokyo markets were closed on Thursday for a national holiday.
