Tokyo shares slipped Monday morning on the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar as well as investors selling stocks to lock in gains from the past week.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 146.32 points, or 0.80 percent, from Friday to 18,234.90.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 5.40 points, or 0.37 percent, to 1,459.13.
Decliners were led by transportation equipment, mining and precision instrument issues.
