Tokyo stocks closed slightly lower Tuesday as investors hit the sidelines ahead of the U.S. Federal Reserve's two-day policy meeting, while others opted to lock in profits following the market's recent gains.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 24.25 points, or 0.12 percent, from Monday to finish at 19,609.50.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged 2.50 points, or 0.16 percent, lower to close the day at 1,574.90.

Issues that retreated the most by the close of play comprised real estate, iron and steel, and service-linked stocks.

Declining issues outpaced advancing ones by 945 to 899 on the First Section.

On the main section, trading volume totaled 1,758.24 million shares, rising from Monday's volume of 1,471.80 million. The overall turnover on Tuesday came to 1,781 billion yen (15.48 billion U.S. dollars).
