Tokyo stocks opened higher on Tuesday as the yen's depreciation against the U.S. dollar bolstered investor sentiment and saw exporter-linked-issues rise on bargain hunting.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 165.78 points, or 0.87 percent, from Monday to 19,151.37.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 13.42 points, or 0.88 percent, at 1,537.81.
Early gainers from the bell comprised mining, oil and coal product, and pharmaceutical-linked shares.
