Tokyo stocks opened lower Tuesday as a firm yen against the U.S. dollar impacted exporter issues, while a poor performance on Wall Street overnight set a pessimistic tone early on.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 57.66 points, or 0.29 percent, from Monday to 20,113.16.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 4.45 points, or 0.28 percent, to 1,605.52.
Pharmaceutical, real estate and machinery-related issues comprised those that declined the most in early play.
