Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday as Wall Street's poor performance overnight set a weak tone, with investors in a circumspect mood ahead of the British general election and the European Central Bank's policy meeting.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 37.19 points, or 0.19 percent, from Tuesday to 19,942.71.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged 2.03 points, or 0.13 percent lower, to 1,594.41.
Insurance, retail and precision instrument-related issues comprised those that declined the most during early trade.
