Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday, as investors opted to lock in profits after the market's solid run of gains recently.

In early trading here, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 59.85 points, or 0.30 percent, from Tuesday to 20,170.56.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 5.08 points, or 0.31 percent, to 1,612.17.

Mining, oil and coal product, and securities-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the first 15 minutes of trading.
