Tokyo shares opened lower Wednesday morning on the stronger yen against the U.S. dollar.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 57.00 points, or 0.28 percent, from Tuesday to 20,138.48.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 5.34 points, or 0.33 percent, at 1,621.80.
Decliners were led by pulp and paper, bank, and oil and coal product issues.
