Tokyo shares open lower on weak U.S. stocks, firm yen

Tokyo shares opened lower Tuesday on weak U.S. shares overnight as well as the yen's rise against the U.S. dollar.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 117.83 points, or 0.62 percent, from Monday to 18,858.88.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 7.60 points, or 0.50 percent, to 1,512.82.

Decliners were led by metal product, transportation equipment and mining issues.
