As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged down 29.64 points, or 0.13 percent, from Friday to 22,873.12.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 1.51 points, or 0.08 percent, to 1,827.57.
