Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Monday, with the benchmark Nikkei stock index retreating to a near two-week low, as more investors moved to secure gains following stocks' recent advance.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 300.43 points, or 1.32 percent, from Friday to end the day at 22,380.99, marking its lowest close since Oct. 31.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 16.95 points, or 0.94 percent, to close at 1,783.49.

Marine transportation, real estate and house-oriented issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
