Tokyo stocks opened lower Tuesday tracking declines on major Asian bourses a day earlier.
As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 261.68 points, or 1.10 percent, from Friday to 23,522.04.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 18.60 points, or 1.04 percent, to 1,774.05.
Marine transportation, mining and electric appliance-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
Financial markets here were closed on Monday for a national holiday.
