Tokyo stocks opened lower Monday following losses on Wall Street late last week amid rising U.S. Treasury yields.
In the opening minutes of trade, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 299.70 points, or 1.35 percent, from Friday to 21,943.96.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 16.30 points, or 0.98 percent, to 1,642.46.
Glass and ceramics product, pulp and paper, and transportation equipment-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
