Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday as the market's predominant cue was a remark made by U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell interpreted as meaning the Fed's interest rate hikes may end sooner than market expectations.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 208.72 points, or 0.94 percent, from Wednesday to 22,385.74.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 14.88 points, or 0.90 percent, at 1,668.54.

Oil and coal product, precision instrument and services-linked issues comprised those that advanced the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
