Tokyo stocks closed sharply lower Thursday as investors offloaded issues following Wall Street's overnight slump after the U.S. Federal Reserve opted to hike its interest rates with two or more hikes expected for next year.
The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 595.34 points, or 2.84 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 20,392.58.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 38.99 points, or 2.51 percent, to finish at 1,517.16.
Marine transportation, securities house, and warehousing and harbor transportation service-linked issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
