TOKYO, May 28 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Tuesday following a positive lead from European markets overnight, but gains were limited by a lack of clear direction on trade issues following U.S. President Donald Trump's state visit to Japan.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 77.56 points, or 0.37 percent, from Monday to close the day at 21,260.14. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 3.99 points, or 0.26 percent, to finish at 1,550.99.

Precision instrument, electric appliance and transportation equipment-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
