TOKYO, June 17 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed essentially flat Monday, as earlier gains on bargain hunting failed to dominate as investors hit the sidelines ahead of key economic events such as a U.S. Federal Reserve policy meeting.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average edged up 7.11 points, or 0.03 percent, from Friday to close the day at 21,124.00. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 6.97 points, or 0.45 percent, to finish at 1,539.74.

Mining, and farm and fishery issues led notable advancers, while iron and steel, and electric power and gas issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
