Tokyo stocks open higher after Japan, U.S. reach trade deal

TOKYO, Sept. 26 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Donald Trump reached a bilateral trade agreement, with auto issues rising after Washington promised to exempt Tokyo from higher auto tariffs.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 106.54 points, or 0.48 percent, from Wednesday to 22,126.69.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, was up 13.39 points, or 0.83 percent, at 1,633.47.

Iron and steel, nonferrous metal and machinery issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
