TOKYO, May 12 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks edged lower in early trade on Tuesday as despite hopes coronavirus restrictions may be partially lifted on a regional basis here this week, concerns about a second wave of the virus dampened investor sentiment.

As of 9:15 a.m. (local time), the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average shed 21.98 points, or 0.11 percent, from Monday to 20,368.68.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, edged down 1.72 points, or 0.12 percent, at 1,478.90.

Marine transportation and iron and steel issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
