Tokyo stocks open higher on Wall Street's overnight gains

TOKYO, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Friday, tracking gains on Wall Street overnight driven by hopes that some countries easing lockdown measures amid the coronavirus pandemic will lead to an increase in economic activity.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 276.23 points, or 1.40 percent, from Thursday to 19,951.00.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 17.84 points, or 1.25 percent, at 1,444.57.

Nonferrous metal, iron and steel and real estate-linked issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
