Tokyo stocks open sharply lower after Dow tanks overnight

TOKYO, May 13 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Wednesday, following the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling overnight on mounting concerns a second wave of coronavirus infections might be brought on by eased business restrictions.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average fell 286.03 points, or 1.40 percent, from Tuesday to 20,080.45.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 15.45 points, or 1.05 percent, at 1,461.27.

Insurance, warehousing and harbor transportation services, and iron and steel issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
