TOKYO, June 8 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed higher Monday as ongoing hopes for the recovery of the global economy were supported by data late last week showing an unexpected increase in U.S. employment figures.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 314.37 points, or 1.37 percent, from Friday to close the day at 23,178.10, marking its highest closing level since Feb. 21.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 18.24 points, or 1.13 percent, to finish at 1,630.72.

Mining, bank, and iron and steel-linked issues comprised those that gained the most by the close of play.
