TOKYO, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Thursday as a sharp increase in new coronavirus cases in multiple U.S. states stocked fears about a second wave of infections and concerns over the outlook for the global economy.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 129.27 points, or 0.58 percent, from Wednesday to 22,326.49.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 8.06 points, or 0.51 percent, at 1,579.03.

Air transportation, mining, and iron and steel-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
