The Shenzhen Component Index closed 0.69 percent lower at 14,377.27 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices stood at 1.26 trillion yuan (about 197 billion U.S. dollars), up from 1.23 trillion yuan on the previous trading day.
Stocks related to agricultural products processing and arms industry led the gains, while those related to coal, steel and electricity led the losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's NASDAQ-style board of growth enterprises, gained 0.23 percent to close at 3,339.6 points.
