Tokyo stocks open lower as WHO upgrades COVID-19 to pandemic

Tokyo stocks opened lower Thursday on increased investors' concerns over the COVID-19 after the World Health Organization (WHO) said the COVID-19 was now a pandemic.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 370.36 points, or 1.91 percent, from Wednesday to 19,045.70.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, lost 28.49 points, or 2.06 percent, at 1,356.63.

Marine transportation, bank and real estate-linked issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
