Tokyo stocks closed lower Thursday as sentiment was dashed by rising concerns that Japan's healthcare system could buckle if spikes in COVID-19 infections continue in urban areas and the pandemic will continue to take a toll on domestic firms' investment, output and overall demand.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 246.69 points, or 1.37 percent, from Wednesday to close the day at 17,818.72.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, dropped 21.21 points, or 1.57 percent, to finish at 1,329.87.

Air transportation, consumer credit and securities house-related issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play.
