South Korea reports 235 more COVID-19 cases, total tops 20,000

BEIJING, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 235 more cases of the COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Tuesday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 20,182.

The daily caseload stayed below 300 for three days, but it continued to grow in triple digits since Aug. 14.

BEIJING -- No new locally-transmitted COVID-19 cases were reported Monday across the Chinese mainland, the National Health Commission said Tuesday.

Ten confirmed cases arriving from outside the mainland were reported Monday, the commission said in its daily report.

No new suspected cases or deaths related to the disease were reported Monday, the commission said.

BUENOS AIRES -- For Argentina's capital Buenos Aires, the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is over, but there are challenges ahead, the city's top health official said on Monday.

"The worst is already over ... but we still have many cases per day," Buenos Aires Health Minister Fernan Quiros told the press. "We need to really maintain the people's focus on compliance with regulations, and the focus on tracking, testing and isolation strategy."

SAO PAULO -- Brazil on Monday said its COVID-19 death toll surpassed 121,000 deaths after 553 more patients died in the previous 24 hours, which took the total number of fatalities to 121,381.

In the same 24-hour period, tests detected 45,961 new cases of infection, pushing the total caseload to 3,908,272, according to the Ministry of Health.

On a positive note, Brazil saw its fifth consecutive day of less than 1,000 fatalities from the novel coronavirus.
