BEIJING, Sept. 8 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

NEW YORK -- Global COVID-19 deaths surpassed 890,000 on Monday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The global death toll from the virus rose to 890,064, with a caseload of more than 27.2 million worldwide as of 3:28 p.m. (1928 GMT), the CSSE data showed.

QUITO -- Ecuador on Monday said a total of 110,092 people have tested positive for the COVID-19 since the start of the outbreak here.

According to the Ministry of Public Health, the death toll from COVID-19 has reached 10,576.

CAIRO -- Egypt registered on Monday 178 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total cases in the country to 100,041, said the health ministry.

Meanwhile, 11 patients died from the coronavirus, taking the death toll to 5,541, the ministry's spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

JERUSALEM -- Israel's Ministry of Health reported 3,331 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, bringing the total infections to 133,975.

It is the highest daily rise since the outbreak of the pandemic in Israel in late February, as the previous record was 2,991 registered on Sept. 3.

OTTAWA -- Canada reported an average daily number of 545 people who tested positive for COVID-19 last week, up 25 percent from the previous week which saw a daily average of 435, said the country's Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam on Monday.

Overall, in the last week, 3,955 people tested positive across Canada, and 28 people died of COVID-19.

RAMALLAH -- Palestine recorded on Monday 789 new COVID-19 cases and three new death cases in the Palestinian territories.

Mai al-Kaila, Palestinian minister of health, said in a press statement that the total COVID-19 cases hit 34,801 and the death toll reached 206.

AMMAN -- Jordan on Monday recorded two more coronavirus-related deaths and 67 new cases, taking the death toll to 18 and the total cases to 2,478.

RABAT -- Morocco announced on Monday 1,386 new COVID-19 infections, taking the tally in the North African country since March 2 to 73,780.

The number of recoveries from the coronavirus in Morocco increased to 56,096 after 822 more were added, while the death toll rose by 33 to 1,394, the ministry of health said in a statement.

DUBAI -- The United Arab Emirates on Monday announced 470 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 74,454.

At the same time, 438 more patients have recovered from the virus, taking the tally of recoveries in the UAE to 66,533, UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said.
