The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 133.58 points, or 0.58 percent, from Thursday to 23,221.40.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 8.03 points, or 0.49 percent, at 1,634.47.
Glass and ceramic product, warehousing and harbor transportation service, and transportation equipment issues comprised those that gained the most by the morning break.
