As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 148.90 points, or 0.65 percent, from Wednesday to 23,181.44.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 10.15 points, or 0.63 percent, at 1,615.55.
Marine transportation, electric appliance and chemical issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minuets after the morning bell.
