SYDNEY, Sept. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Australian dollar climbed against the greenback on Tuesday, with the defensive U.S. currency responding to gains in equity markets overnight.

At 07:00 (AEST), the Australian dollar was buying 70.73 U.S. cents, up from 70.34 U.S. cents on Monday.

Safe havens the U.S. dollar and Japanese Yen were both lower to start the day, leaving room for more exposed currencies such as the Aussie to add some value.

The Aussie clawed its way back towards 71 U.S. cents from a two month low where it spent much of last week.

At 09:30 (AEST), the local unit was buying 70.85 U.S. cents.
