Tokyo stocks open higher amid U.S. election vote counting

TOKYO, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Thursday following Wall Street's solid lead overnight, with investors keenly awaiting the outcome of vote counting in a razor tight U.S. presidential race between incumbent Donald Trump and Democratic challenger Joe Biden.

As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 191.18 points, or 0.81 percent, from Wednesday to 23,886.41.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, rose 4.60 points, or 0.28 percent, at 1,631.85.

Pharmaceutical, precision instrument, and information and communication issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minute after the morning bell.
