Tokyo stocks open higher on hopes for vaccine, fresh stimulus

TOKYO, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened higher Wednesday on hopes the global pandemic could be brought under control with vaccine development.

Japan's latest stimulus package being passed by the government to help combat the pandemic added to an upbeat mood in early trade.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 245.73 points, or 0.93 percent, from Tuesday to 26,712.81.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, added 10.71 points, or 0.61 percent, at 1,769.52.

Machinery, pulp and paper, and air transportation-oriented issues comprised those that gained the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
