TOKYO, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks opened lower Tuesday as sentiment was dampened by the government's planned suspension of its subsidized travel campaign over the upcoming holiday period amid a surge in COVID-19 cases and the negative impact this could have on the broader economy.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 40.94 points, or 0.15 percent, from Monday to 26,691.50.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, fell 4.40 points, or 0.25 percent, at 1,786.12.

Air transportation, marine transportation and iron and steel issues comprised those that declined the most in the opening minutes after the morning bell.
