SYDNEY, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Australian state of Victoria has relaxed its border restrictions with neighbouring state of New South Wales (NSW) from Monday afternoon but remains closed to 10 local government areas (LGA) in Sydney as the capital of NSW.

The 10 LGAs remain as "Red Zones" under Victoria's new travel permit system, meaning traveling from those areas to Victoria is not permitted unless travellers have an exception, exemption or work or transit permit.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has cast her doubt on the necessity of such restrictions as both states continue to record zero local COVID-19 cases on Tuesday.

Around 1 million people in Sydney are still not able to enter Victoria because of those restrictions, Berejiklian said.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said Victoria is reviewing the border control for the remaining 10 red zones in Greater Sydney on daily basis and will update the permit zone list in a fast and orderly manner.

Meanwhile, The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) will also ease its border restriction for NSW from Tuesday afternoon, with the same 10 Sydney's LGAs remaining on its hotspot list.
