SYDNEY, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Australian dollar eased against the greenback on Monday as fresh COVID-19 concerns boosted the defensive U.S. dollar.

At 07:00 (AEST), the Australian dollar was buying 77.24 U.S. cents, down from 77.58 U.S. cents on Friday.

"Markets closed the week on a soft note amid rising Covid infections and obstacles to U.S. fiscal stimulus," Westpac Bank economists said in a morning note.

"Equities fell modestly, the defensive U.S. dollar rose slightly and commodities were under pressure."

At 09:30 (AEST), the local unit was buying 77.11 U.S. cents.
