Aussie dollar hits fresh 3-year high

SYDNEY, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- The Australian dollar continued to gain ground against the greenback on Thursday, inching closer to 80.00 U.S. cents after hitting a fresh three-year high.

At 07:00 (AEST), the Australian dollar was buying 79.47 U.S. cents, up from 79.15 U.S. cents on Wednesday.

The U.S. dollar was mixed against the G10 currencies, with commodity currencies outperforming and defensive currencies underperforming.

"AUD/USD dipped to a 0.7895 low in the New York morning but then rebounded with equities and commodities to 0.7968 - another three-year high," Westpac Bank economists said in a morning note.

At 09:00 (AEST), the local unit was buying 79.66 U.S. cents.
