S.Korea's export volume keeps rising for 6 months in February

SEOUL, March 31 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's export volume kept rising for six straight months in February owing to strong demand for semiconductors and transport equipment, central bank data showed Wednesday.

The export volume index stood at 109.26 in February, up 4.2 percent from a year earlier, according to the Bank of Korea (BOK). It continued to increase for six months since September last year.

In terms of volume, shipment of computers, electronic and optical devices, including semiconductors, expanded 6.1 percent in February from a year ago, while the transport equipment export jumped 26.2 percent.

The export volume for chemical products increased 9.9 percent, but those for coal and oil products tumbled 18.9 percent last month.

The export value index advanced 10.4 percent in February on a yearly basis, keeping an upward trend for the fourth consecutive month.

In terms of value, the export for computers, electronic and optical devices went up 11.9 percent, and shipment for chemical products soared 22.5 percent amid the higher price for global crude oil.

The import volume index continued to rise for six straight months, and the import value index gained for the third straight month in February.
