U.S. stocks end mixed amid economic data

NEW YORK, Nov. 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks finished mixed on Thursday as investors digested a slew of economic data.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average decreased 60.10 points, or 0.17 percent, to 35,870.95. The S&P 500 increased 15.87 points, or 0.34 percent, to 4,704.54. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 72.14 points, or 0.45 percent, to 15,993.71.

Seven of the 11 primary S&P 500 sectors ended in red, with energy and utilities both down 0.54 percent, leading the laggards. Consumer discretionary rose 1.49 percent, the best-performing group.

U.S.-listed Chinese companies traded mostly lower with seven of the top 10 stocks by weight in the S&P U.S. Listed China 50 index ending the day on a downbeat note.

On the economic front, U.S. initial jobless claims, a rough way to measure layoffs, registered 268,000 in the week ending Nov. 13, following an upwardly revised level of 269,000 in the prior week, the Department of Labor reported on Thursday.

Economists polled by Dow Jones estimated initial jobless claims to have fallen to 260,000.
