SEOUL, June 2 (Xinhua) -- South Korea's online shopping logged a double-digit growth in April due to solid demand for travel and transport services in the cyberspace, statistical office data showed Thursday.

Shopping in the cyberspace totaled 16.46 trillion won (13.1 billion U.S. dollars) in April, up 11.9 percent from a year earlier, according to Statistics Korea.

The double-digit increase came after the government's lifting of all anti-COVID-19 measures, except an indoor mask mandate, raised demand for online travel and transport services.

The online purchase of travel and transport services surged 89.8 percent from a year earlier to 1.33 trillion won in April. It was the largest in over two years since January 2020.

Online demand for culture and leisure services more than doubled in the month, and the clothing purchase jumped 19.4 percent.

Food delivery services in the cyberspace gained 5.7 percent in April on a yearly basis, marking the lowest expansion since relevant data began to be compiled in 2017.

The online purchase of cosmetics shrank 17.6 percent amid the lower number of travelers to the country, and those for computers and peripherals dwindled in single figures.

Mobile shopping through smartphones grew 15.7 percent over the year to 12.28 trillion won in April, accounting for 74.6 percent of the total online shopping. (1 U.S. dollar equals 1,253.91 won)
