U.S. dollar declines after weekly jobless data

NEW YORK, May 7 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar slipped in late trading on Thursday as market participants digested the weekly report on jobless claims.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, was down 0.21 percent at 99.8882.

In late New York trading, the euro rose to 1.0825 U.S. dollars from 1.0803 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound rose to 1.2357 dollars from 1.2344 dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar rose to 0.6486 U.S. dollar from 0.6415 U.S. dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 106.29 Japanese yen, higher than 106.07 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar decreased to 0.9733 Swiss franc from 0.9749 Swiss franc, and it decreased to 1.3991 Canadian dollars from 1.4121 Canadian dollars.

On the data front, another 3.169 million Americans filed for unemployment benefits in the week ending May 2, the U.S. Department of Labor reported Thursday. That brought the seven-week total to about 33.5 million.
