U.S. dollar climbs amid risk-averse sentiment

NEW YORK, June 11 (Xinhua) -- The U.S. dollar strengthened in late trading on Thursday as traders were worried about the risks of a second wave of virus infections, boosting demand for the safe-haven currency.

The selling of riskier assets accelerated on Thursday. U.S. equities fell sharply with the Dow plunging more than 1,700 points in afternoon trading.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against six major peers, increased 0.77 percent at 96.7262.

In late New York trading, the euro was down to 1.1301 U.S. dollars from 1.1389 dollars in the previous session, and the British pound decreased to 1.2595 dollars from 1.2765 U.S. dollars in the previous session. The Australian dollar decreased to 0.6847 U.S. dollar from 0.7017 dollar.

The U.S. dollar bought 106.80 Japanese yen, lower than 107.11 Japanese yen of the previous session. The U.S. dollar fell to 0.9431 Swiss franc from 0.9437 Swiss franc, and it increased to 1.3605 Canadian dollars from 1.3383 Canadian dollars.
