Tokyo shares opened higher on Tuesday as investors were cheered up by a record-high close of Dow Jones Industrial Average overnight and a softer yen.

As of 9:15 a.m., the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 1.94 points, or 0.01 percent, from Monday to 17,674.56.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange leapt 1.55 points, or 0.11 percent, to 1,401.55.

Gainers were led by warehousing and harbor transportation service, mining and oil and coal product issues.
