Tokyo shares opened slightly higher early Tuesday on strong U.S. shares overnight, while the impact of a strong earthquake hitting northeastern Japan earlier in the morning remained minor to the market.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 21.89 points, or 0.12 percent, from Monday to 18,127.91.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 2.96 points, or 0.21 percent, at 1,445.89.
Gainers were led by mining, oil and coal product and real estate issues.
