Tokyo shares opened higher Friday with market confidence boosted by some upbeat U.S. economic data.
As of 9:15 a.m. local time, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 51.90 points, or 0.27 percent, from Thursday to 19,124.15.
The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 4.19 points, or 0.27 percent, to 1,532.34.
Gainers were led by oil and coal product, insurance and mining issues.
